Major methamphetamine arrests
A Sevier County man was arrested on drug charges Friday in a major arrest by Cocke County and Newport authorities. At 5:30 pm, officers from both agencies responded to the West Highway 25/70 Citgo on a report of a heroin overdose. An unidentified woman told the officers she purchased heroin from a man and then took it to the parking lot of the convenience store where she shared it with friends, Katerina Mills, 44, and Delbert Watson, 55, both of Sevierville. The female said both Mills and Watson shot up with the heroin and almost immediately, both lost consciousness and so she called 911. Both victims were taken by First Call EMS to Newport Medical Center where later Friday they were in stable condition. The caller saying she had previously purchased heroin from the supplier on several occasions, then agreed to again contact him for another purchase. With drug agents David Robertson and Danny Hartsell monitoring the conversation, the alleged supplier, David Chandler Cushman, 47, Pigeon Forge, agreed to make another delivery. When Cushman arrived, he was confronted by the agents and questioned as to whether he had anything illegal on his person. He said he had cocaine in his pocket. A subsequent search of the subject and his Dodge Durango by Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes revealed four grams of heroin, one ounce of methamphetamine, six grams of cocaine and 134 Xanax pills. Further investigation revealed that Cushman was wanted by Fulton County, Georgia authorities for trafficking cocaine and heroin in that jurisdiction. He also was driving on a revoked license. The Dodge Durango and the trailer it was towing, along with $650 in cash were seized. Sheriff Fontes said Cushman is charged with Possession of Schedule 1 Heroin, Schedule 2 Cocaine, Schedule 2 Methamphetamine and Schedule 5 Xanax for resale, Driving while in possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts Aggravated Assault, and Driving while revoked.. The assault charges stem from the overdose of Mills and Watson. Cushman is being held without bond. Earlier on Friday, Newport Captain Amy Gentry jailed Sheila Proffitt, 44, Midway Road, Del Rio, and her passenger, Joseph McGaha, 28, Buffalo Road, Bybee, following a traffic stop. Proffitt was stopped for light and and insurance law violations. A subsequent search of the pickup truck revealed 5.5 grams of Methamphetamine, a meth pipe, baggies and digital scales. And Proffitt who had needle marks on her hands, told Captain Gentry she had earlier been shooting up methamphetamine. Now both Proffitt and McGaha face charges of possession of Methamphetamine for resale and possession of drug paraphernalia.
