Shooting Update Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes this afternoon released additional information regarding a Sunday evening officer involved shooting. The Sheriff said Deputy Lt. Chris Gregg responded to Middle4 Creek Road just after 7 pm, where he encountered Carmen Beau Rongione, 42, Pepper Lane, Cosby. Rongione had active warrants for his arrest for criminal trespassing and failure to appear in court. The officer located the wanted suspect but Rongione fled across a creek into a heavily wooded area with thick foliage. Officer Lt. Gregg released his K-9 partner from his patrol unit and both pursued the suspect on foot. Rongione ran into thick foliage with briars and turned around facing the pursuing officer and his K-9 Partner, armed with a large machete style knife from a sheath on his right side. "He threatened to kill the officer and his K-9 officer, and then began to swing the large blade with the officer in very close proximity to the suspect. The officer pulled his service weapon firing one shot striking the suspect in the abdominal area," the sheriff said. Back up officers arrived on scene and medical attention was rendered to the suspect but shortly after being transported by EMS the suspect died. The officer sustained several scratches and minor injuries from the thick briars. A large knife was located at the scene. Rongione is listed on the Tennessee Bureau Of Investigation sex offender registry and is classified as a Violent offender. Jail records show Rongione had 21 arrests since 2001 including an arrest in July for Burglary, Theft of Property over $10,000, Arson, Aggravated Burglary of the David Morris residence on Pepper Lane, Cosby. Lt. Gregg is on administrative leave with pay, as the investigation continues by the sheriff's department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
