Seniors and opiods
The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality data has ranked Tennessee No. 6 in the nation for the rates of opioid-related senior citizen hospital admissions. Up to 1,505 in 2015. In fact, the rate of hospitalizations for Tennesseans 65 years and older due to painkillers has more than tripled in a decade. The report says older adults are being hospitalized for a variety of reasons; from falls and auto accidents after taking pain pills to unintentional overdoses. Tennessee is dealing with an epidemic that claims more lives than car accidents. It also is straining courts, jails and hospitals and burning out the limited treatment options. Tennessee, along with Alabama, lead the nation in the number of per-person opioid prescriptions with an average of more than two prescriptions written for every man, woman and child.
