CLB talks jail issues
Members of the Cocke County Legislative Body(CLB) meeting Monday re-elected Clay Blazer as their chairman. Clayton "Skip" Ellison was elected chair pro temp. The body was told that state officials have approved a plan to borrow $1.3 million from the Debt Service Fund to operate the General Fund until property taxes begin coming in. Then the money will be re=paid to the Debt Service Fund. Commissioner Love Henderson expressed concern that some of her constituents blame the CLB for the jail's recent loss of certification. She said efforts have been made to provide adequate staff for the facility and she called on her fellow commissioners to approve a plan to release inmates on GPS monitoring as well as drug and alcohol monitoring to alleviate the current jail overcrowding and to save money. Inmates would be required to pay the $7.00 daily cost unless they are indigent, then the state pays the cost. Henderson also said the site of a former drag strip on the Cosby Highway would be available as a jail or justice center. Sheriff's Department Administrative Captain Derrick Woods said the jail certification was rescinded because of a "lack of measurable progress" toward a new jail. Chair Blazer also expressed concern that previous meetings of the Corrections Partnership had low attendance. In other action, the body again declined to rescind the Fire Department Civil Service Board.
