Premium gasoline provides little savings While some vehicles are designed to run on premium octane gasoline only, others simply recommend it. Last year, AAA’s research into premium fuels found that consumers wasted nearly $2.1 million dollars using premium-grade gasoline in vehicles designed to run on regular fuel. AAA tested a variety of vehicles that recommend, but do not require the use of premium gasoline. Although drivers of vehicles that recommend, but do not require, premium gasoline are unlikely to see any benefit from using premium gasoline during typical city or highway driving. Fuel economy for test vehicles averaged a 2.7 percent improvement. Premium gasoline costs 20-25% more than regular. The fuel economy improvements recorded during AAA testing do not offset the potential extra cost to purchase premium gasoline "While many consumers assume premium gasoline will help their vehicle perform better because of the premium price, AAA’s research shows it is a waste of money for many,” said Stephanie Milani, Tennessee Public Affairs Director, AAA. “If your vehicle recommends regular gasoline, AAA research shows that there is no benefit to using premium gasoline; likewise, if your vehicle recommends, but does not require, premium fuel, the extra cost of premium fuel may not provide the fuel economy improvements driver are looking for."
