Cushman faces new charges
A Cocke County Jail inmate faces charges after he allegedly assaulted a Corrections officer on Monday. Sheriff's Department Detective Robert Thornton said officers were serving breakfast to inmates when David Cushman, 48, Pigeon Forge, stepped out of his cell, as Corrections Officer CPL Mellissa Perry handed him a food tray. Cushman allegedly tried to grab another tray, and when Officer Perry attempted to push the inmate back into his cell, he grabbed the female officer and dragged her into the cell. Detective Thornton said the two struggled in the cell at which time Cushman pushed CPL Perry against the wall, grabbed her by the throat and choked her. The Corrections Officer required medical treatment at the Newport Medical Center following the attack, and Cushman was charged with Aggravated Assault. The incident is not the first run-in that Cushman has had with jail officers. In December, Corrections Officer Donovan Lambert was preparing to escort Cushman, from the jail when the inmate allegedly threw a cup of urine from his cell. The substance struck Officer Lambert on his neck and back, and a subsequent test of the liquid confirmed it was urine. Cushman was originally jailed on charges of Possession of Schedule I(Heroin), Schedule II(Cocaine), Schedule II(Methamphetamine) and Schedule V(Xanax) for resale, Driving while in possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, two counts Aggravated Assault, and Driving while Revoked.
