Newport Home grant
The Tennessee Housing Development Agency on Thursday hosted an information session on a grant received for housing rehabilitation in Newport. Project Manager Chris Oelgoetz addressed the 20 homeowners in attendance saying the $500,000 grant likely will rehab only a limited number of homes. Only code violations will be upgraded and if the home cannot be repaired, it will be torn down and replaced. Only owner-occupied homes in the city of Newport are eligible. Homes located in the floodplain are not eligible, nor are family members of Newport officials. Mobile and modular homes are not eligible and neither are households that are over income. So who is eligible? Applicants must be very low income; the owner must have lived in the home for at least one year; it must be the homeowner's principal residence, and the owner must have homeowners insurance. Oelgoetz says homes will be chosen for rehab based on a point system. "The worse off you are, the more points you will get. We add up all the points and we establish a priority list...starting at the top and working our way down. Low income homeowners who want to apply for assistance should contact Project Manager Heather Allen, 615-386-0222.
