Newport gas leak
Traffic on West Highway 25/70 in Cocke County was blocked for 15 minutes Friday afternoon after an above ground natural gas connection was ruptured. The incident just after 5 pm occurred on Country Path Road in the Reidtown community as a tractor-trailer pulled from the side road and struck a stop sign as he turned. When the rig backed up, it struck the above ground gas valve which was several feet off the roadway. Cocke County Deputy Chris Barnes who was among the first on the scene said natural gas was shooting in the air from the rupture when he arrived. Employees of Jefferson-Cocke County Gas Utility District were able to shut off the gas leak quickly, and traffic was allowed to flow smoothly. Employees of the utility said area homes were not impacted by the leak.
