Dean challenges Lee to a Town Square Debate
The campaign for governor is underway in Tennessee. Speaking to a group of supporters and members of the media in Jackson on Friday, Democrat Karl Dean extended an invitation to Republican Bill Lee to join him on a “Town Square Campaign” across Tennessee. “Voters want substantive, forward-looking conversations about real issues, and we now have the opportunity to give them that in this election,” Dean said. Dean invited Lee over the coming weeks, to appear together “in as many small town squares, suburban neighborhoods, and urban churches as possible to talk about the issues,” citing education, jobs and healthcare as the three main issues on voters’ minds. “Let’s get beyond the sound bites and have candid conversations together in town square style conversations so we can hear from Tennesseans,” Dean said. “These don’t have to be formal debates, although I welcome those opportunities too. It can be as simple as the two of us standing on the back of a pickup truck. All we need is a place to have a conversation and for you, the people of Tennessee, to join us.” Dean said he sent a letter to Lee’s campaign on Friday officially extending the invitation. The letter proposes that the first town square conversation take place in Sumner County on Wednesday, Aug. 15.
