Woodside arrest
A North Carolina man faces charges following a Saturday morning stabbing incident in Jefferson County. Jefferson County Sheriff G.W. "Bud" McCoig said the saga began at about 8 am when Grayson Woodside, 33, Sherrills Ford N.C. wrecked his 2002 Mercedes Benz at the intersection of Spring Creek Road and Brethren Church Road. Woodside was found walking on Highway 411 and transported back to the scene of the crash. There he was issued a traffic citation. David Brooks with Supreme Towing arrived at the scene and loaded the Mercedes onto his rollback. Woodside then asked Brooks to take him to Middle Tennessee and said he would give Brooks the title to the Mercedes Benz. Sheriff McCoig said Brooks told the Woodside he could not go that far but offered him a ride to the Pilot Truck Center at the 417 exit off Interstate 40, and so Woodside was taken there. Deputies Mark Snowden and Sgt. Curtis French followed the rollback, but as it traveled, observed Brooks jump out of the vehicle from the driver's side or the wrecker, at the intersection on Highway 25/70 and Hammer Road, while holding his neck. Deputies activated their blue lights and sirens and attempted to stop the rollback, which continued traveling westbound on Highway 25/70. "Woodside was operating the rollback in a reckless manner, crossing over the center lines, passing vehicles in no-passing zones and running vehicles off of the roadway. The defendant was driving in excess speeds with no due regard for the safety of the citizens," the sheriff said. Woodside continued onto Highway 92 before entering Interstate 40 westbound, traveling at speeds in excess of 85 miles-per-hour. Eventually, the wrecker ran off the left side of the roadway, crossed the median and struck an eastbound vehicle. The driver of the second auto was taken to the UT Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Woodside after crashing reportedly tried to stab himself and required hospital treatment. Sheriff McCoig said Brooks told investigators he was approaching the intersection of Hammer Road and Highway 25/70 looking to his left for traffic when Woodside pulled a knife and placed it to the left side of Brook's neck. The subject then allegedly pulled the knife across the neck of Brooks, while holding the victim's head against the driver's side door window. Brooks was able to push his attacker away and jump from his rollback. Woodside then took possession of the rollback without the consent of Brooks. The wrecker operator was transported to Jefferson Memorial Hospital for treatment of a neck wound. The Dodge Ram rollback, valued at $70,000, was released back to Supreme Towing by Sevierville Police. This morning Woodside was being held without bond on charges of Especially Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Theft of Property over $60,000, Evading arrest, DUI and Reckless Endangerment. Jefferson County officers and Sevierville officers were assisted by troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
