Pedestrian struck on West Broadway in Newport
A pedestrian was struck on West Broadway in Newport just before 6 pm on Friday. Newport Patrol Officer Joshyua Shults said Charles Shults, 49, Moon Court, Sevierville, stepped into the path of a 1998 Toyota operated by Jack Nease, 68, Indian Creek Road, Dandridge. Witnesses said the incident occurred near the Cope Boulevard intersection when Shults stepped from the turn lane into the path of the Nease vehicle. Officer Shults said the injured man had a strong odor of alcohol on his person and had also sustained a serious head injury. Although he was alert and conscious, Shults was having a difficult time breathing. He was taken to the Newport Medical Center by First Call EMS personnel and later was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. At last report, Shults was listed in stable condition.
