Cocke County education
During the Monday evening meeting of the Cocke County Finance Committee, the chairman of the body, Commissioner Forrest Clevenger, raised an issue which he said is a major factor in the lack of recruitment of jobs and new-comers to the community. "That is the poor, poor shape that our schools are in. We got our grade scores back from the state and we did extremely poorly. It is almost an embarrassment." According to Clevenger, Newport Grammar School is ranked in the top ten elementary schools in the state and Grassy Fork Elementary is ranked in the top 20 schools. But he said Cocke County High is ranked near the bottom in the state, there are only ten high schools in the state below us. We are ranked 250th. in the state as far as high schools." The commissioner went on to say he is not sure what the county school board is doing to address the issue, but he suggested that the legislative body meet with the school board to talk about ways to improve county schools. "There is no issue economically than our school system. If this county is going to move forward we have to improve our education. No one is going to re-locate here, no one is going to bring jobs here, with ratings the way we have them." Clevenger argued that the problem needs to be a discussion in every household. "There is no other factor, other than education, that is going to get us out of the hole we are in. According to the state, only 24 percent of the kids who graduate from Cocke County High School are prepared for a post secondary degree. That means 75 of every 100 kids who walk out of that school, not ready to go to college. We are producing alot of people who are ill prepared to face this world, out of this high school. And I don't know what to do." The chair suggested the committee needs to do something to address the issue. "The 'community', added Commissioner Shalee McClure Benson.
