Newport receives $950,0000 state grant
The City of Newport has received a $950,000 multimodal grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The announcement was made Tuesday evening by Newport City Planner Gary Carver during the Newport City Council meeting. Carver said the grant will be used to construct sidewalks from the Old Cosby Highway/Cosby Highway intersection north to the corner of Cosby Highway and Broadway, then continuing west along Broadway and ending at the Broadway/Hedrick Drive Intersection. Concurrently there will also be a sidewalk extension across the street, from the Broadway/C Street intersection continuing west to the parking lot of Newport Federal Bank. The grant will also fund pedestrian signal upgrades at the Hedrick/Broadway and Cosby Highway/Broadway intersections. The grant is 95 percent from the state, matched with 5 percent local funding of $50,000, with the maximum amount awarded to any community being $950,000. The City of Newport will be able to construct $1 million in new infrastructure with the local match. The improvements are a part the Downtown Master Plan as well as the downtown bike/pedestrian plan and the developing corridor improvement plans for the city. The Newport City Council meeting Tuesday evening accepted the grant and approved the local match funding. Newport was selected to receive funding along with 15 other cities and counties including Morristown. "Completing projects such as this will make the City eligible for other grant opportunities through state and federal resources," explained Carver. "This will be another step for the city toward noticeable improvements to our community."
