Grassy Fork reduced ISO rating Walt Cross, Chief of the Grassy Fork Volunteer Fire Department says home owner’s whose fire insurance is based on the Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating and who live in the Fire Department’s fire district, should anticipate decreased home fire insurance rates the first of May. Chief Cross says as the result of the recent Public Protection Classification (PPC) survey conducted by ISO, the Department’s Public Protection Classification will go from a 9 rating to a 05/5Y effective May 01. He points out that the ISO ratings go from a 01 to a 10, with a 01 being the best rating. ISO reports that Grassy Fork’s has a duel rating of 05/5Y. The first number is the class that applies to properties within five road miles of the responding fire station and 1,000 feet of creditable water supply, such as a fire hydrant, suction point, or dry hydrant. The second number is the class that applies to properties within five road miles of a fire station, but beyond 1,000 feet of a creditable water supply. The agency further identifies properties more than five road miles from a recognized fire station as a class 10. If a property is between five and 7 miles from the responding fire station, it will qualify for a 10W rating, but only if the property is within 1,000 feet of a creditable water supply. Creditable water supplies include fire protection systems using hauled water in any of the split classification areas. A 10W rating gives credit to risks within five to seven road miles of the responding fire station and within 1,000 feet of a creditable water supply. Chief Cross said his department’s ability to achieve the improved ISO classification was based on three major factors: 1. New water mains and hydrants all rated as “blue top”, representing “very good water flow” (over 1,500 gallons per minute). 2. The new Fire Station #2 in Hartford, near the I-40 on ramp on Hartford Road. 3. The addition of three fire trucks and the equipment on them. Chief Cross expressed appreciation to all the individuals and businesses who assisted with donations, the annual sales of fireworks and the participants in the annual 5K and Color runs that made the funding of Station 2 and the additional trucks possible.
