Shadow of the Smokies Trail
The Cocke County Partnership on Thursday hosted a Member Mingle with the stars of the "The Moonshiners" TV series, including Mark & Digger, and Kelly & JB. The event was held at Gatlinburg East/Smoky Mountain KOA on the Hooper Hwy in Cosby. As a part of the event, Tourism Director Linda Lewanski cut the ribbon(grapevine) on the Shadow of the Smokies Adventure Trail. It was developed with a $25,000 grant from the Tennessee Three Star program, which is designated to market and improve several trails. Signs will be erected identifying the trail, along with safety signs and some of the funding also will be used to improve the trailhead. " Alot of locals use this area from Laurel Springs Road to the Maddron Bald trailhead in the national park, "explained Lewanski. "They use it for biking and hiking so we wanted to market it to other folks and let them know about the jewels in our county. This is phase 1 but we hope to extend it into Sevier County." Judy and Shane McGaha talked about several of the historic sites along the trail which can be hiked or biked. The trail which follows the spine of the Smokies, travels through Rhododendron thickets and lots of wildflowers.
