Cocke County Jail break-in
While it is common for jail inmates to escape from jail, it is not so common for an individual to break into a jail. Cocke County authorities have charged Christopher Williams, 24, Sweetwater Road, Newport, after he broke into the annex jail early Friday morning. The jail has an exterior recreation yard which is surrounded by fencing, and the fencing is topped with razor wire. Cocke County Deputy Lt. Michael Whitmer said Williams climbed over a gate to the recreation area, but he was unable to climb back out, before he was spotted at 4:30 am by corrections officers. The subject was asked if he had anything he should not have on his person, and the suspect denied having anything illegal. But a subsequent search revealed a folding pocket knife, and a large baggie that contained two smaller baggies with suspected methamphetamine weighing .81 grams, on the suspect. And so Williams was removed from the recreation yard and jailed on charges of possession of methamphetamine, introduction of contraband into a penal institution and criminal trespassing.
