Cocke County schools and TNReady
The Cocke County School Board, meeting Thursday heard from Instructional Supervisor Amanda Waites who brought the body a review of the TNReady scores in the system. She said five schools in the system are designated as "Focus Schools", meaning certain student group at those schools have scored in the bottom five percent of the state. Among the deficiencies are a low achievement growth and chronic absenteeism. And so the state requires the system to develop school improvement plans for those schools. Waites pointed out that overall, Cocke County schools are not very far behind the state average in many areas. And in some areas, Cocke County tests higher than Newport Grammar School. And Waites said compared to other systems of the same size and economic make-up, Cocke County ranks higher than many other school systems. Love Henderson, who heads the Work Ethic program, said the state has purchased the rights to the program from the Niswonger Foundation, and so the program soon will be offered statewide. She also reported that a number of industries outside of the community are interested in the program which has contributed to decreased absenteeism and also assists in job location for the student. Assistant Director of Schools Casey Kelley added that he believes the system will receive additional state funding for vocational equipment. Kelley also reported that state funding is increasing for school safety. He expects the local system will receive about $158,000 again this year to boost safety. The funding likely will be earmarked for tinted windows, upgraded cameras and enhanced door locks. He told the board that the Family Resource Center is helping lots of students, and student families. And the program is addressing the issue of absenteeism with students. And Kelley told the board that the system is working to update its suicide prevention policy. Nancy Brawley reported that the grand re-opening of the updated Cocke County High School auditorium is planned for 2 pm on September 29. And the board approved more than $20,000 for a new LED sign at Centerview Elementary School.
