Cocke Veterans program
Cocke County military veterans were recognized during two events Monday in the community. At Cocke County High School the Beta Club hosted the event, which featured speakers, music and renditions. The Cocke County High School Chorus sang "America". An Empty Table recognized POW/MIA's, and Cocke County Trustee Rob Mathis himself a retired veteran recognized the family members of veterans who he said are too often forgotten when those who made sacrifices are recognized. Representatives of the AMVETS and Disabled American Veterans detailed the various programs their organizations offer to local veterans. The keynote speaker was Lt. Col. Rusty Gregg, Retired from the US Air Force. He attended the US Air Force Academy where he also played football. Later Gregg served in a number of combat situations around the world including Desert Storm. After retirement, Gregg was employed for a number of years as a Fed Ex pilot. He called on those in the audience to honor veterans every day. "On Veterans Day and Memorial Day, most Americans profess to truly love our veterans, but it is imperative to remember that veterans are defending us 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. Our gratitude and respect must be forever." And Lt. Col. Gregg suggested that a veteran, in essence, has written a blank check payable to the United States of America," for an amount up to and including our lives. That ladies and gentlemen is honor." He thanked the veterans in the audience for doing what they were called to do "so that we can safely do what we are free to do." State Representative Jeremy Faison, Republican of Cosby, told the crowd that America is great in large part due to its volunteer army, which volunteers its sacrifices for the country. Newport Mayor Roland Dykes III said none of his official events have been more important to him than the veteran's events he has participated in. And he said the sacrifices veterans paid with blood must never be forgotten, resulting in freedom, liberty and peace for Americans. Later on Veteran's Day, a second program was held at the Cosby Elementary School.
