Nettles wants more opportunities for female country muicians
Jennifer Nettles made more than a fashion statement on the CMA Awards red carpet Wednesday night in Nashville. The Sugarland star wore a white suit emblazoned with a message: "Play our f.....'n records, please & thank you." On the back, the suit read, "Equal play." "People do want to hear women's stories," Nettles told the audience. "It's a fallacy to say that they're going to turn the channel." The unequal treatment of women in country is a long-standing, much discussed issue, with radio play often cited as the primary concern. Nettles would like to see women represented equally on country radio and in playlists. "Just play it. It's that simple," she said. This year, a trio of women hosted the CMA Awards: Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton. But only one woman was nominated for Entertainer of the Year, Carrie Underwood, and the award went to Garth Brooks. A woman hasn't won the award since 2011 when Taylor Swift took it home.
