Calvin is recovering
Officials of the Friends Animal Shelter in Newport are trying to determine who dropped off an abused dog at the gate to the facility Tuesday morning. Elisha Henry, the shelter director, said Calvin was found at 7:30 am when shelter employees arrived for work. "He was hyperthermic and shivering," she said. The small black dog was taken to a veterinarian where X-rays showed it's skull had been struck. The dog's head was swollen and he likely has lost sight in his right eye. The dog may also have several fractures. "We have to find out who's doing this, why they're doing it and have tougher charges for people that are doing these horrible, horrible crimes," she says. Henry is asking that anyone who has information about the injuries to Calvin, contact the Cocke County Sheriff's Department at 423-623-3064. The shelter manager says the facility is full and no animals are currently being accepted. She is calling on the community to adopt a pet from the shelter which houses animals from Cocke County.
