English Mountain Road fire
Cocke County firefighters say a double wide home was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning. The Cocke County Fire Department along with personnel with the Cosby and Grassy Fork Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the blaze on English Mountain Road at 1:28 am. They found the 1,500 square foot home fully engulfed in flames when they arrived on the scene. There were no vehicles at the home, near the Finchum Road intersection. Cocke County Deputy Lt. Michael Whitmer said he understood the home is owned by Newport Federal Bank, which had foreclosed on the residence and had evicted the occupant. A neighbor reported seeing a vehicle drive up the driveway, turn around and then leave just before the fire was observed. The loss is placed at $75,000.
