January jobless numbers
Data from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development shows unemployment rates improved in many counties during February. The lagging statistic reflects the employment situation before the COVID-19 health emergency started to take an unprecedented toll on the economy. Williamson County has the lowest unemployment in the state, with a rate of 2.6%. The figure represents a 0.1 of a percentage point increase from the county's January rate. Local numbers for February look like this; Cocke County 6.4 percent, Jefferson County 4.8 , Greene County 5.3 , Hamblen County 4.4 and Sevier County 6.2 . But those numbers are expected to jump when the March figures are released. The Department said Thursday, that recent unemployment claim filings have increased dramatically. For the week ending March 14 there were only 2,700 new claims. A week later however, on March 21 the state saw another increase to 39,000, and by March 28 the jobless claims had increased to more than 94,000. In East Tennessee, 20,025 claims had been filed at last report.
