Earthquake rattles the area
A number of local residents in Bybee and Parrottsville reported feeling an earthquake Sunday morning. The United States Geological Survey says a Magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck around 8:07 am near Sparta, North Carolina, not far from the border with Virginia, the strongest quake to hit the area in more than 100 years. It was the second strongest quake ever recorded in North Carolina,- the strongest 5.2, happened in 1916 in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Sunday quake damaged structures and knocked items from shelves in both homes and stores just after 8 am., but no injuries were reported.
