Crashes in Newport and Cocke County
Newport and Cocke County authorities each investigated a traffic crash on Monday which left a total of two persons injured. Deputy Lt. Max Laughter said the first crash occurred at 7 am on Joe Reed Road in the Bybee community. Gary Woods, 35, Jimtown Road, Newport was operating a 2007 Dodge near the Marshall Drive intersection when the car dropped off the roadway. The vehicle traveled in the ditch line for 81 yards before it struck the open end of a drainage culvert. After hitting the culvert the auto rolled eight times, for a total distance of another 66 yards before it came to rest on its side. The driver, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected through the windshield of the vehicle, sustaining lacerations to his arms and head, in addition, he sustained leg and back pain. First Call EMS transported Woods to the Newport Medical Center for treatment. Lt. Laughter said a Suboxone bottle with Woods' name, and containing paraphernalia used to snort the drug, was found near the vehicle. Charges in the incident of DUI, a seatbelt violation and speeding, are pending the results of a hospital blood draw. A Newport woman is being sought in connection with a two-vehicle crash later on Monday, at the intersection of the Cosby Highway and Old Cosby Highway. Newport Sgt. David Clevenger said the crash occurred at 11 am and left a Texas man with injuries. Joshua Shultz, 24, Ft. Hood, Texas, said he had the green light when he pulled from the Old Cosby Highway and was struck by a vehicle traveling on the Cosby Highway. A passenger in the offending car said the brakes failed however Sgt. Clevenger determined there was no indication that the brakes had malfunctioned. After the collision, the offending driver, Jennifer Lynn Holt, 42, Newport, exited the car, told the passenger she has pending warrants and fled on foot. Sgt. Clevenger later spoke to Holt by telephone but she refused to come to the police department. When asked her location, Holt reportedly said, "I'd rather not disclose that information." Holt now is being sought on charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, no driver's licenser, and disregarding the red light. Shultz sustained an arm injury but declined medical treatment.
