Tax revenue
Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration Commissioner Butch Eley says state revenue collections for December were $156.4 million higher than the budgeted estimate and nearly 8% more than December 2019. “The state’s sales tax, representing November taxable sales and the early holiday shopping season, continues to signify strong consumer activity during the ongoing pandemic," Ely said. Sales tax revenues were $28.4 million more than the estimate for December, and more than 6 percent higher than 2019. For the first five months of the fiscal year, revenues are $435 million higher than estimated, up 5 percent. With motorists traveling less, gasoline and diesel revenues decreased by nearly 7 percent compared to last December. And with restaurants closing because of the pandemic, liquor-by-the-drink taxes were $1.8 million less than estimates, and 37% lower than last year.
