Tennessee election laws After a divisive presidential election in which former President Donald Trump unsuccessfully raised the claim of widespread voter fraud which was rejected by the states, the courts, his own administration and then Congress, Tennessee lawmakers are now pushing forward with voting restrictions. They have introduced a bill that would abolish early voting, end the use of voting machines and require watermarked paper ballots hand-marked by voters, creating a log jam on election day. Some lawmakers say early voting has led to mischief in many states, although there is no evidence of that.Another bill would require fingerprinting of all voters. Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee, calls the bills a voter suppression effort, saying the bills would reduce turnout and make it harder to vote. She says the legislation would only lead to longer lines and fewer voters, hitting working people, senior citizens and people with disabilities the hardest." In the last election,a record number of Tennesseans voted early, but the state still ranks near the bottom of the country in turnout. "The misguided bill can only be seen as a clear effort to suppress the vote," Weinberg added.
