Newport Fire update
The investigation is continuing into the Sunday night fire that destroyed the Southern Sunrise Cafe, formerly East Tennessee Coffee Company, at the corner of McMahan Avenue and East Broadway, and damaged the nearby offices of the Fourth Judicial District Public Defenders Office and the adjacent Newport Dance Studio. Both East Broadway and McMahan Avenue were blocked for five hours as Cocke County firefighters joined the Newport Fire Department in battling the flames. Newport Fire Chief Jeremy Shelton said because he was out of town at the time of the fire he asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Bomb and Arson team to conduct the investigation. He is currently awaiting a report from that agency. Chief Shelton said he is not aware of any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire. Currently the cause of the blaze is undetermined. Although the coffee shop was destroyed, the public defender's office and the dance studio sustained smoke and water damage. "Fires happen in buildings, especially older buildings," the chief said. "Sometimes it is hard to rule things out and that is why the cause currently is undetermined." Fourth Judicial Public Defender Rebecca Lee has issued a statement saying, "Please bear with us as our Newport office was damaged by fire. We are still assessing the damage however, our Newport staff will be displaced and unreachable during this time."
